Leave and Availability

Leave and Availability
Leave and availability are related, but they solve different planning problems:
- Leave: records approved time away from work.
- Availability: records when someone is generally available or unavailable for rostering.
Using both helps teams avoid shift conflicts, reduce manual corrections, and keep roster decisions consistent.
When to use each
- Use leave for annual leave, personal leave, and other approved absences.
- Use availability for recurring restrictions such as study, second jobs, or childcare commitments.
- Use both when a staff member has regular limits plus specific time-off requests.
Why this matters for casual staffing
For casual teams, availability is often a key planning input. Keeping availability current lets roster managers quickly identify who can pick up shifts without over-contacting unavailable staff.
